Our Programs
AMEL Leadership Institute - The AMEL Institute is a unique online academy empowering young changemakers with practical knowledge and skills so that they can carry out their civil society activism more safely and effectively. The goal is to fill critical knowledge gaps and to transfer know-how from experienced activists and experts to brave and creative young people who are taking action to advance dignity and rights for all. The AMEL Institute includes the regional program (chagemakers from the Middle East and Africa) as well as a tailored Sudan program.
AMEL Issue Education - At the highest international levels, AMEL engages in issue education on key topics related to the Middle East and Africa (MEA), with a view towards creating relationships and momentum around shared interests and values. We bridge the gap between young MEA civic activists and international halls of power in order to foster mutual learning and engagement on issues of mutual concern. We fill information gaps and provide critical insights on issues including civic movements, youth empowerment, and regional dynamics in MEA. We provide subject matter expertise on human rights, conflict transformation, Red Sea security and resolving crises in Africa and the Middle East, among others.
AMEL Research - AMEL is working to empower young activists to produce research and analysis on key topics including human rights, democracy, conflict and more. Activist-led research can fill critical information gaps and provide vital insights to decision-makers around the world about developments on the ground and the impacts and prospects for frontline activists and movements. AMEL is thus piloting a number of approaches to creating evidence-based research and analysis products.
AMEL Allyship & Incubator - Key to building better human and international relations, allyship is another focus of AMEL’s work. By building and sustaining ally relationships, AMEL fosters understanding across borders and diversity while creating momentum for action on shared human rights goals. AMEL also seeks to incubate innovative initiatives and empower emerging young leaders in this vein. Initiatives have included the AMEL Speakers Bureau and the Inter Jewish Muslim Alliance (IJMA), among others.
Human Rights Innovation & Education - AMEL’s newest program, Human Rights Innovation and Education, led by renowned advocate Nicholas Opiyo – works to bolster the knowledge, skills and safety of young human rights defenders and democracy activists across Africa and the Middle East, and to innovate new approaches to advancing dignity and rights for all in the region. In parallel, the Global North component of the program seeks to leverage accountability mechanisms, provide bridge-building human rights education at universities, and advise the legal, philanthropic and business communities on innovative and effective methods for supporting human rights and democracy across Africa, the Middle East and the Global North.
