AMEL Alumni Are Giving Back

During the course of the past several months, AMEL has worked to empower members of its Alumni Community to give back by sharing their know-how with fellow alums, namely young changemakers from across Africa and the Middle East. Since September 2025, AMEL has worked with Alumni who volunteered to lead peer-to-peer training, helping them to prepare and run online sessions in their areas of expertise. Alumni Trainers came from countries such as Kenya, Morocco, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe, among others.

The sessions spanned a variety of topics and formats, including:

  • Philanthropy Leadership Culture for Sustainable Humanitarian Response and Human Rights Advocacy in Africa and the Middle East: a session focused on strengthening changemakers’ capacity to adapt to funding challenges.

  • Inclusive Language in the Digital Realm - Creating a Safe and Supportive Internet for All: a session focused on fostering safer, more inclusive digital spaces through intentional and empathetic communication.

  • Catalysts for Change - Building Confidence & Economic Independence in Young Women in Africa: a session focused on how youth development and economic empowerment initiatives can help young women build confidence and gain the autonomy to act in their own right.

  • #IAmRemarkable: Self-Promotion & Confidence Building: an interactive session exploring how to speak confidently about achievements and strengthen self-advocacy skills.

  • Breaking Barriers on Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR): A youth-led discussion, offering a safe space to explore SRHR challenges and highlight innovative youth-driven advocacy approaches.

  • Digital Storytelling & Blogging as a Tool for Activism: a session on how digital storytelling and blogging can challenge narratives, reclaim histories, and amplify marginalized voices, especially through writing in local languages.

  • Strategic Litigation Against Gender-Based Violence: a practical session exploring how legal tools and regional mechanisms can be used to drive justice and structural change.

  • Negotiating for Peace - Skills for Conflict Prevention & Resolution: a session focused on practical negotiation strategies—BATNA, ZOPA, WATNA—and their application in activism, leadership, and community work.

These sessions reflect the AMEL Alumni Community’s diversity of expertise and strong commitment to growing collectively, while connecting with one another across borders and disciplines. In the coming months, additional sessions on a variety of topics will be organized so that Alumni can continue to help build the knowledge and skills of fellow members of the AMEL Alumni Community, which is now nearly 2,000 members strong!

In parallel, 40 Alumni are preparing to serve as volunteer Mentors to help guide a new cohort of trainees during the upcoming Spring 2026 AMEL Institute training program. Additionally, other activities and opportunities are continually shared on AMEL’s Alumni platform, keeping members informed, engaged, and connected to a global landscape of learning and professional development.

Each and every day, we continue building a community that learns, grows, and transforms together - stay tuned for more!
